ASCII

Despite all the brand new technologies, computer is still a machine that can understand only two “words”. They are “Yes” and “No” or “1” and “0”. “1” means there is a signal in a circuit and “0” means the opposite. This way of coding is known as the binary code. Either 1 or 0 represents the smallest peice of information: a bit. The first computers could operate only with this kind of data. There were special cards with many holes to give instructions to a computer. They were called “punched cards”.
Increasing the amount of information computers could operate with programmers found out it was too complicated to give them instructions in binary code. They needed something more useful and convenient.
The ASCII[aski] contains 128 symbols. It needs one byte to encrypt them. It was the first standard code. You can count that you can make 256 combinations.
